The Challenge

As a global brand with a presence across dozens of specialist channels, attribution quickly became a complex puzzle.

They sponsor world-class events, work with ambassadors, advertise in niche cycling and triathlon magazines, and appear on countless podcasts and YouTube channels. Word-of-mouth and community recommendations play a huge role too.

With so many different marketing efforts running in parallel, the team needed a way to understand what was actually working - and where new customers were first discovering the brand.

The Solution

Precision Hydration implemented a Grapevine post-purchase survey to ask one key question:

“How did you first hear about us?”

They built out a wide range of response options to reflect their diverse marketing mix, covering everything from paid placements to partner podcasts, community forums, and referral channels. By comparing survey responses against UTM parameters for each order, the team was able to cross-reference tracked attribution with actual customer-reported discovery.

What data are you collecting?

We use Grapevine to run a post-purchase survey that asks each customer how they first heard about us, giving us clear zero-party attribution data across a wide mix of channels including podcast ads, events, athlete partnerships, and specialist media.

Where do you analyse the data?

We use the Grapevine Shopify Flow trigger to automatically send survey responses and UTM tags into a master Google Sheet. That lets us combine response data with full order details, including all the UTM parameters, in one central place.

We’ve set this up across all our websites, so we have a single source of truth for attribution. It means we can easily track performance, spot trends, and report on what’s working across every marketing touchpoint.

How are you using the data?

We use the data to get a clearer picture of what’s actually driving new customers. By combining Grapevine survey responses with UTM tags in a single Google Sheet, we can easily compare what customers tell us with what tracking shows. That gives us much better visibility into how our top-of-funnel channels are really performing.

The spreadsheet is our go-to resource during marketing meetings. It helps us quickly spot trends, highlight high-performing campaigns, and identify channels that might be under- or over-performing. Being able to sort and filter all that data in one place makes a big difference.

Ultimately, it’s helped us move away from guesswork. We can make more confident decisions about where to invest, test new channels with a clear way to measure results, and focus our efforts where they’ll have the biggest impact.
