Post-Purchase Survey Data in Triple Whale

Learn how Grapevine Surveys, Shopify Flow and Triple Whale work together, so every "how did you find us?" answer lands in Triple Whale right next to the rest of your attribution data.

Triple Whale 🤝 Grapevine Surveys

Triple Whale is an attribution and analytics platform used by plenty of Shopify brands. It has its own Post-Purchase Survey table, built to hold exactly the kind of answers your attribution survey collects, plus a public API for sending them in.

There's no direct Grapevine and Triple Whale integration. Instead, Shopify Flow does the heavy lifting: each time a customer answers your survey, Flow posts that answer to Triple Whale, linked to the order. It's a do-it-yourself setup, and once it's switched on it runs by itself.

The Workflow Objective:

Send every answer from your Grapevine attribution survey into Triple Whale's Post-Purchase Survey table automatically, so customer-reported attribution sits alongside the rest of your attribution data.

The Challenge

Pixels track clicks. Plenty of purchases start somewhere a pixel can't follow, like a podcast, a friend's recommendation or a TikTok watched on a different phone. Asking customers how they found you fills that gap, which is why post-purchase attribution surveys have become a staple.

The catch is where those answers end up. If you already use Grapevine for NPS, CSAT or product feedback, adding a second survey tool just for attribution means more on your thank you page and more to manage. Keep it all in Grapevine, though, and the attribution answers sit in one place while your attribution modelling sits in Triple Whale. Stitching the two together means exports and spreadsheets, and in a busy week that just doesn't happen.

The Solution

Run your attribution question in Grapevine and let Shopify Flow pass each answer to Triple Whale. Grapevine's Question answered trigger fires around 5 minutes after a customer submits their answer. Flow checks it's the right survey and question, then posts it to Triple Whale with the order ID, order total and the customer's answer.

In Triple Whale, the answer appears in the Post-Purchase Survey table and is included in attribution. Match your answer options to Triple Whale's defaults (Facebook, Instagram, Google, TikTok and so on) and they slot straight into Triple Whale's own channels. Anything else you add still comes through, grouped under Other.

You get the flexibility of Grapevine's display rules and survey types, and the answers still land where your attribution decisions get made.

Because Claude works with your live survey data rather than generic advice, it can surface anomalies in plain English: "Podcast responses have tripled week over week," or "'Other' free-text answers have jumped from 4% to 22%, worth checking whether an answer option is missing or broken," or "Completion rate dropped from 78% to 41% after the 3rd. Did the survey change?" You get a written flag with the likely cause attached, not just another chart to interpret. Run it whenever you want a gut-check, or set it up to run on a regular cadence so the monitoring happens without you having to remember.

To do in Grapevine

Create a single choice survey with Triple Whale's default question: "Which of the following led you to purchase today?" Add answer options that match Triple Whale's channels exactly, case included, for example Facebook, Instagram, Google, TikTok, Email and Referred by a friend.

Set it to show in the checkout app block, so it appears on your thank you and order status pages. Add display rules if you like, such as new customers only. Then make a note of the Survey Code and the Question Code, as Flow needs both.

To do in Triple Whale

Go to Data, then APIs, and generate a new API key with the PPS: Write scope. That's the only permission it needs. Keep the key somewhere safe, as you'll paste it into Shopify Flow next.

Build in Shopify Flow

The workflow has three steps:

  1. Trigger: Grapevine Surveys Question answered.
  2. Condition: the Survey Code and Question Code match yours, and the answer is linked to an order.
  3. Action: Send HTTP request, posting the answer to Triple Whale's Post-Purchase Survey API with your key.

The setup guide has the request body ready to copy and paste. If Send HTTP request isn't available on your Shopify plan, the React Flow app adds it.

How to setup this integration

Send every attribution answer straight into Triple Whale, automatically, with one Shopify Flow.

How can this data be used?

Put what customers say next to what your tracking sees. With survey answers in Triple Whale, the channels that never show up as a click finally get a seat at the table, right where you decide where the money goes.

Attribution Accuracy

  • See the channels pixels miss, like podcasts, word of mouth and influencer posts
  • Compare what customers say with what tracking credits for the same orders
  • Spot channels getting more credit than customers give them

Spend Decisions

  • Back budget changes with answers from real customers
  • Watch how answers shift when a new campaign or channel goes live
  • Use the rest of your post-purchase survey data in Grapevine to dig into the why

Your customers already know how they found you. Now Triple Whale does too.
